The Power of Being With Jesus: Finding Boldness in a Hostile World

God's Word For You

Watch the whole service and sermon from Acts 4:13–22: “We Cannot Be Silent About Jesus.”  In a culture that pressures believers to stay quiet, this message shows from Acts 4 how ordinary, “uneducated” disciples became bold witnesses simply because they had been with Jesus. You’ll be challenged to deepen your daily communion with Christ, stand firm when the world tries to silence the gospel, and live as undeniable evidence of God’s transforming power—for His glory alone.

Live By His Word

  • Boldness is formed in the presence of Jesus Christ through intimate communion and fellowship with Him
  • Three marks of believers who have been with Jesus: they speak boldly for Christ, they speak wisely beyond their credentials, and they point others back to Jesus
  • The world cannot deny God's work because the evidence is living, present, and publicly undeniable
  • Christians face constant pressure to conform to culture, remain silent about truth, and stop claiming Jesus as the only way to salvation
  • The world's strategy is to contain the spread of the gospel through threats and commands to be silent
  • Believers must choose to obey God over man, driven by conviction produced by the Holy Spirit
  • Walking with Christ produces conviction that prevents compromise of faith and truth
  • Our ultimate purpose as Christians is to glorify God through faithful witness
  • Communion with Christ is the key to experiencing His blessings, strength, wisdom, and power
  • When we withhold the gospel, we rob God of His glory

Why This Passage Still Matters

  • It reminds you that real boldness doesn’t come from personality, education, or status, but from having “been with Jesus” (Acts 4:13). Your courage to live and speak for Christ in a hostile culture is rooted in daily communion with Him—time in His Word, prayer, and obedience—rather than in your own natural abilities.
  • It shows you that God’s work in and through you is undeniable, even when people reject your message. Just as no one could deny the healed man standing before the council, your transformed life and faithful witness are living evidence of the risen Christ, and God can use that testimony powerfully, whether others accept it or not.
  • It calls you to obey God rather than people when the two conflict (Acts 4:19–20). In pressures to be silent, to compromise truth, or to fit in with the culture, you are summoned to say with Peter and John, “We are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard,” living for God’s glory above human approval.

The Power of Being With Jesus: Finding Boldness in a Hostile World

In an increasingly intolerant culture, speaking openly about Jesus Christ has become one of the most challenging aspects of the Christian life. We face constant pressure to conform, to stay silent, to stop claiming that Jesus is the only way to salvation. The temptation to blend in with the world around us grows stronger each day.

Yet in the book of Acts, we find a powerful story that speaks directly to this struggle—a story that reveals the secret to supernatural boldness in the face of opposition.

When the World Demands Silence

In Acts chapter 4, the apostles Peter and John found themselves in an uncomfortable position. After healing a man who had been crippled his entire life, they were arrested and brought before the Sanhedrin—the religious leaders who held significant power in Jerusalem. These weren't friendly inquiries; this was an interrogation designed to intimidate and silence.

The religious establishment demanded to know: "By what power or in what name have you done this?" Their question dripped with hostility. They wanted Peter and John to back down, to apologize, to promise never to speak about Jesus again.

But something remarkable happened.

Instead of cowering in fear, Peter—filled with the Holy Spirit—boldly proclaimed that the healing occurred "by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified and whom God raised from the dead." He declared without hesitation: "There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to people by which we must be saved."

This wasn't reckless bravado. This was Spirit-empowered courage rooted in an unshakeable reality.

The Secret to Supernatural Boldness

What astonished the religious leaders most wasn't just what Peter and John said, but how they said it. Acts 4:13 captures their reaction perfectly: "When they observed the boldness of Peter and John and realized that they were uneducated and untrained men, they were amazed and recognized that they had been with Jesus."

There it is—the secret to Christian boldness: being with Jesus.

These apostles had no formal rabbinical training. They weren't scholars or religious professionals. By worldly standards, they were nobodies. Yet they spoke with an authority and confidence that left educated religious leaders speechless.

The difference? They had spent time with Jesus.

Boldness isn't manufactured through self-help techniques or positive thinking. It doesn't come from credentials or formal education. True Christian boldness is always formed in the presence of Jesus Christ, cultivated through intimate communion with Him.

Three Marks of Those Who've Been With Jesus

When someone truly walks in fellowship with Christ, three distinctive characteristics emerge:

First, they speak boldly for Jesus. They aren't silent about their faith, even in uncomfortable settings. They know their identity in Christ and are confident in who empowers them. The fear of man loses its grip when the presence of God fills your heart.

Second, they speak wisely beyond their credentials. God grants supernatural wisdom to those who spend time with Him. You don't need a seminary degree to be an effective witness for Christ. What you need is consistent, genuine communion with Jesus. Many who have formal training depend on their credentials rather than the Spirit of God, while those who walk closely with Christ speak with wisdom that transcends human education.

Third, they point others to Jesus.
Their lives become living testimonies that direct people toward Christ. It's not about drawing attention to themselves but making Jesus visible through their words, actions, and character. When you truly commune with Christ, people will see Him in you.

The Undeniable Evidence

The religious leaders faced an impossible dilemma. Standing before them was the formerly crippled man—now completely healed. Acts 4:14 says, "Since they saw the man who had been healed standing with them, they had nothing to say in opposition."

The evidence was undeniable. A man crippled for over forty years was now standing—a living, breathing miracle that no argument could refute.

This reveals a profound truth: when you faithfully proclaim and live the gospel, God produces evidence that no one can ultimately argue against. Your testimony—the transformation God has worked in your life—is irrefutable. People may reject it, but they cannot disprove what God has done.

The problem isn't lack of evidence. Creation testifies to a Creator. Historical documents attest to Jesus' life, death, and resurrection. Countless transformed lives bear witness to His power. The issue isn't evidence—it's faith. It's a heart problem, a sin problem, a willingness problem.

The World's Strategy: Silence the Truth

Unable to deny the miracle, the religious leaders resorted to their next tactic: intimidation. They threatened Peter and John, commanding them "not to speak or teach at all in the name of Jesus."

This is the world's strategy—always has been, always will be. Since it cannot refute the gospel, it tries to silence it. Through threats, social pressure, cultural stigma, and fear of consequences, the enemy seeks to muzzle the message of Jesus Christ.

Unfortunately, for many Christians, the world doesn't have to try very hard. Believers voluntarily remain silent, choosing comfort over conviction, approval over obedience.

The Choice Before Us

Peter and John's response should echo in every Christian's heart: "Whether it's right in the sight of God for us to listen to you rather than to God, you decide. For we are unable to stop speaking about what we have seen and heard."

Notice they didn't say "we shouldn't stop"—they said "we are unable to stop." Their communion with Christ had so transformed them that silence was impossible. Speaking about Jesus wasn't an obligation; it was an overflow of their relationship with Him.

Every day, we face the same choice: Will we obey God or man? Will we please our culture or our Creator? Will we compromise our faith for comfort, or will we stand firm in conviction?

When you truly walk with Christ—when you commune with Him daily, when His Spirit fills you, when His love overwhelms you—obedience becomes natural. You cannot stop speaking about Jesus because your heart won't allow it. Your allegiance belongs to Christ alone.

For God's Glory

The story concludes with this beautiful statement: "The people were all giving glory to God over what had been done."

This is the ultimate purpose of our witness—God's glory. When we faithfully proclaim Christ, when we live transformed lives, when we refuse to be silenced, God receives glory. Our very existence as Christians is meant to point people to Him.

When we withhold the gospel, we rob God of His glory. We declare Him unworthy. But when we boldly speak, serve, love, forgive, and obey, we magnify His name before a watching world.

The Key to Everything

If there's one truth to carry forward, it's this: your communion with Christ is the key to everything. Your boldness, your wisdom, your effectiveness as a witness—all flow from your intimate fellowship with Jesus.

The question isn't whether you have enough training or talent. The question is: Are you spending time with Jesus? Are you walking in daily communion with Him?
When you do, boldness will follow. Wisdom will come. Your witness will be undeniable. And God will be glorified through your life.

The world needs Christians who have been with Jesus—not just people who know about Him, but those who truly know Him. Will you be one of them?

God Has Spoken: Your Response Matters

Through this message, God reminds us that boldness to proclaim the name of Jesus in a hostile world flows from a daily, living communion with Christ that the world cannot deny or silence—so how will we respond in our own lives to walk closely with Him and speak courageously for Him?

Boldness is Formed by Being with Jesus

  • True boldness doesn't come from credentials, education, or self-confidence.
  • It comes from communion and fellowship with Christ.
  • The religious leaders recognized that Peter and John "had been with Jesus".

Three Marks of Someone Who Has Been with Jesus:

  • They speak boldly for Jesus.
  • They speak wisely beyond their credentials.
  • They walk in a way that points others to Jesus.

God's Work Cannot Be Denied

  • Even opponents cannot deny what God has done.
  • Our testimony and transformed life are living evidence.
  • The healed man standing before the Sanhedrin was undeniable proof.

We Must Obey God Over Man

  • The world will always try to silence the gospel.
  • We face a choice: please people or please God.
  • Conviction comes from walking with the Holy Spirit.

Our Ultimate Purpose is God's Glory

  • When we withhold the gospel, we rob God of His glory.
  • Faithful witness brings glory to God.
  • We exist to glorify God in all we do.

Understanding the Text

  1. Read Acts 4:13-22. What stands out to you most from this passage?
  2. Why were the religious leaders so amazed by Peter and John? What does this teach us about the source of spiritual boldness?
  3. The sermon emphasized that "it's not an evidence problem, it's a faith problem." What does this mean? How does this apply to people you know who reject Christ?

Personal Reflection

  1. On a scale of 1-10, how would you rate your current "communion with Christ"? What evidence in your life shows that you've "been with Jesus"?
  2. The pastor mentioned three marks of being with Jesus. Which one is most evident in your life? Which one needs the most growth?
    • Speaking boldly for Jesus
    • Speaking wisely beyond credentials
    • Pointing others to Jesus
  3. What pressures do you face in your daily life that tempt you to remain silent about Jesus? (workplace, family, social settings, etc.)

Going Deeper

  1. The sermon states: "Many Christians voluntarily remain silent—the world doesn't have to try hard to silence us." Why do you think this is true? What fears or concerns keep Christians silent?
  2. Peter and John said, "We cannot stop speaking about what we have seen and heard" (v. 20). What has God done in your life that you cannot stop talking about? If you struggle to answer this, why might that be?
  3. How does our obedience (or disobedience) to share the gospel affect God's glory? Have you thought about witnessing in these terms before?

Live It Out

  1. The key to boldness is "communion with Christ." What practical steps can you take this week to deepen your fellowship with Jesus?
    • Daily Bible reading
    • Extended prayer time
    • Worship
    • Meditation on Scripture
    • Other practices
  2. Who is one person in your life that needs to hear about Jesus? What specific step can you take this week to share the gospel with them?
  3. When faced with the choice between pleasing people or pleasing God, what helps you choose God? How can we develop stronger conviction?

Challenge Yourself

Choose ONE of the following to practice this week:
1: Deepen Your Communion
  • Commit to spending 15-30 minutes daily in prayer and Bible reading.
  • Journal about what God is teaching you.
  • Share with the group next week how this affected your boldness.

2: Bold Witness
  • Identify one person to share your testimony with this week.
  • Pray for an opportunity and the boldness to take it.
  • Report back to the group (for accountability and encouragement).

3: Overcome Fear
  • Identify your biggest fear about sharing the gospel.
  • Bring it to God in prayer daily.
  • Ask a group member to pray with you about this specific fear.

Look Inward

  • How much time did you spend with Jesus this week?
  • Did you speak about Jesus to anyone? What happened?
  • What pressures did you face, and how did you respond?
  • What would change in your life if you truly believed you "cannot stop speaking about Jesus"?

Ask God To Shape You

  • Pray for boldness to speak about Jesus.
  • Pray for deeper communion with Christ.
  • Pray for specific opportunities to witness this week.
  • Pray for those who need to hear the gospel.
  • Pray that God would be glorified through your lives.
